Most railways have been both passenger and freight transport networks for many years, albeit not without placing more importance on one or the other of the two business sectors depending on the context on each transport market because the travel markets and the freight transport markets everywhere have always been different. In the European Union and in Japan, it is passenger transport that has become the railway companies' prime business especially since they were able to benefit from dedicated high speed rail systems whereas in eastern Europe, Russia, China, America and Australia, the focus is on freight transport.
