Towards a single European railway system: The railway industry viewpoint

Growing awareness of the strategic role that railways can play in meeting the mobility challenge has prompted a process of structural reorganisation in the sector and a new approach to its type of services and equipment. In turn this is paving the way for a new form of marketing/sector deregulation. On a parallel, the European Union has taken steps to revitalise the sector by approving the so-called "infrastructure package". A total of three directives have been produced setting the regulatory framework for a railway services and equipment market of European proportions.
