Until recently railway equipment contracts were strongly oriented towards purchase and commissioning of supplies. Customers purchased and commissioned equipment from manufacturers who, following final acceptance of their products at the end of the guarantee period, were absolved from further legal obligations. The trend today is however to involve the manufacturer more extensively in the life cycle of the equipment supplied by adding the notion of quality of service to the contractual agreement.
