While EWS assured RBI that it had coped well with the Rugby blockade over-run through the use of alternative routes, it was Freight-liner lntermodal that suffered by far the worst loss of freight business between December 24 and January 4. This was due in part to the lack of diversionary routes cleared for 9 ft 6 in high containers moving from Felixstowe to the West Midlands, northwest England and Scotland. It was very fortunate that Network Rail had managed to replace before Christmas the bridge over the Great Ouse at Ely, wrecked by a derailment on June 22 2007 (RB1298 p3). This meant that the direct route from Ipswich to Peterborough was available to take trains to both the ECML and the WCML at Nuneaton.
