Oldham Loop sets retained at GMPTE's expense

Greater Manchester PTE is to fund the retention of five two-car DMUs at Northern Rail which became surplus after the closure of the Oldham Loop on October 3 for conversion to a Metrolink route, writes Tony Miles. The need for the sets became more pressing during the first week of the closure when many more passengers who had lost their rail service opted to drive to stations on the main Rochdale - Manchester Victoria route, causing severe peak overcrowding.
