West Coast Route Modernisation Resignalling Continues

The signalling component of the West Coast Route Modernisation programme has cost between ￡2·5bn and ￡2·9bn, according to Network Rail's WCRM Major Programme Director, Dick Mcllhattan. This is around 28% to 32% of the total upgrade, finally costed at ￡9bn, that started in 1998 and was 'completed' in December 2008.rnThis is a surprisingly large share, considering that much of the signalling installed in the early 1970s north of Weaver Junction in Cheshire remains in place. But there is also unfinished business on those sections of the WCML south of Manchester and Liverpool that were electrified in the 1960s.
