DfT's weight targets for the Intercity Express Programme, widely criticised by railway engineers, have been missed by the Hitachi Super Express Train design by a wide margin. In the 1EP Train Technical Specification, DfT Rail specified parameters under two headings, 'essential' and 'desirable', the latter being the most ambitious.rnIn some cases performance was to be measured against a 'reference train'. For the electric 1EP this was the Intercity 225 in service on the East Coast Main Line.rnIn its press statement announcing Hitachi as preferred bidder, DfT Rail provided a table comparing the electric SET with 1C225. This also allows the new train to be compared with the specification (right).
