Under the Comprehensive Spending Review, DfT is required to make savings of 21% from its resource budget and a comparatively minor cut of 11% in its capital spending. Claiming to have taken 'big steps forward in improving efficiency', DfT says internal savings will be achieved through 'better procurement and management of contracts', improved delivery of frontline services, savings in rail costs and a reduction of 'lower priority programmes'. Central departmental administrative costs are being cut by a third.rnLower-priority activities to be trimmed include some marketing and research programmes. Available resources for government-funded research will be targeted on projectsrnwhich most directly benefit the front line'. Only the most effective marketing approaches will continue.
