Capacity challenge remains for freight

Despite the decline in freight traffic on Network Rail since it peaked at 21-88 billion net tonne-km in 2006-07 (below), Rail Freight Group Chairman Lord Berkeley assured the Railway Study Association on January 6 that official forecasts showing a further doubling of tonne-km by 2030 would still be achieved, even if delayed by the current recession.
