ORR acts on crossing safety

Following a steady trickle of collisions between trains and road vehicles on locally-monitored automatic open crossings (AOCLs), the death of three people at Halkirk AOCL on September 29 2009 (RB1352 p2) prompted ORR to issue last month 'a series of initiatives' to improve level crossing safety in general, and in particular at the 128 AOCLs in Britain, not all of which are Network Rail's responsibility.
