A shortage of suitable workshop capacity for installing onboard equipment poses significant risks to the projected timescale for introduction of ETCS in the UK, according to signalling industry insiders. ETCS Level 2 is due to be introduced on the GWML and the Thameslink core in 2018 and on the southern part of the ECML the following year. Whilst the new 1EP, Thameslink and Crossrail train-sets are expected to be delivered 'ETCS-ready', significant numbers of existing vehicles will have to be retrofitted, as happened with the ATW Class 158s and NR Class 97 locomotives used on the Cambrian Early Deployment Scheme.
