Crossrail moves ahead

Transferred to llford depot at the end of last year, the first of the 66 Class 345 Aventra EMUs being built by Bombardier was due to begin test running on the Great Eastern Main Line on the night of January 7. Running in a reduced seven-car formation due to restricted platform lengths at London Liverpool Street, the first Class 345s are due to start revenue operation on TfL Rail services between Liverpool Street and Shenfield from May. Addressing the Railway Study Association on January 3, MTR Crossrail Programme Director Nigel Holness explained that the units would initially be maintained by Bombardier at llford pending completion of the Crossrail depot at Old Oak Common.
