The study of international broadcasting is often approached as the study of no more than a specialized service that formed an addition to regular national broadcasting. In his book on US-French international broadcasting, Vaillant goes well beyond this by exploring the effect of historical processes, occurringon both sides of the Atlantic, on the interconnectivity of radio and US-French identity. He hereby builds on what Michelle Hilmes did for British and American broadcasting in Network Nations (2012). Vallaint crafts his argument following close reading and close listening of programme scripts and newly discovered recordings (found in both US and French archival collections) and an array of secondary literature where he draws on theory from sound studies, science and technology studies, gender studies and geopolitics, arguing that'broadcasting, sound, and listening helped constitute a mass-mediated geopolitics' (4).
