There must always be some sort of connection to generate the initial interest. Certainly that was so when many modellers had experienced National or wartime service and had close links with certain aircraft. Warbirds have always been popular for their nostalgia and the fact that there are relatively few left in flying condition. I grew up in an area with many airfields and have seen types from Spitfires and Lancasters to Concorde and the Space Shuttle, all within a range of about sixteen miles from home. And yet I have never been tempted to model any of these. Add to these the private types of biplanes and civil aircraft and the choice is enormous.
