Lean Six Sigma (LSS) merges process optimization (Six Sigma) and waste elimination (lean) practices. By controlling variation, customers ultimately receive predictable services. This does not ensure customer satisfaction, however, because processes still can be off target. Customer needs must be understood clearly before processes are optimized.LSS provides public visualization of key process metrics so everyone can participate in quality assurance. Involving everyone who touches a process in continuous quality improvement is fundamental to LSS. LSS began as a quality protocol in manufacturing environments in the 1970s and expanded into healthcare and other corporate settings over the ensuing decades. Today, it's finally being adopted in educational settings.
