The Essential Six Sigma

You can hardly pick up a news or business magazine these days without coming across an article about Six Sigma. It originated at Motorola in the early 1980s, and its implementation helped the company win the 1988 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Fundamentally, Six Sigma is a methodology for disciplined quality improvement. Because this quality improvement is a prime ingredient of total quality management (TQM), many companies find adding a Six Sigma program to their current business system gives them all or almost all the elements of TQM: [current business system] + [Six Sigma] = [total quality management (TQM)].
