Many change models have been proposed, but one stands out as particularly effective in practice: the transtheoretical model (TTM), also known as the health behavior change model. The model originates from directly observing how people really did or didn't change in response to urgent medical needs. The model name's provenance is from several fields of health practice, including stopping smoking, controlling weight, eliminating high-fat diets and increasing exercise. Initiated by James Prochaska,~(1,2) the theory has been validated in many different areas of behavioral change. For that reason, it's been tagged with the term "transtheoretical" to show how it can be applied across medical disciplines and beyond.
