Repeatability and repro- Ducibility (R&R) studies are based on the concept of variance components estimation. This is a remarkable achievement of statistical science because people usually think in terms of means and trends, not variation around a mean. These types of studies provide useful information about which human or gage component of the measurement process should be improved. These studies are a crucial step before starting a statistical process control procedure. They are conducted so observations being charted will provide meaningful information and not just measurement error.
