Our society is faced with a number of major challenges; the most significant of these include the aging society, the related challenge of increasing cost of healthcare, increasing social safety/quality of life, and attaining a sustainable level of energy consumption in light of the available resources. In many cases, these major challenges cannot be solved by traditional incremental products but require disruptive solutions to create sustainable growth. It has proven to be quite complex for large industrial organizations to successfully introduce new disruptive propositions in these, economically and socially, highly relevant fields. The success of new concepts is highly dependent on the match with emerging societal processes that involve a wide range of interacting and interdependent stakeholders. Because of a high degree of structural uncertainty, the outcomes of such changes are by no means easily predictable. For industry, it is very difficult to introduce these disruptive innovations without a solid basis of evidence; before introducing these products/systems on the markets, companies need to be sure that they work and that they work reliably.
