EU exports 11 % less RCP to third countries in 2013, exports to non-EU countries lowest since 2007

The 28 member states of the European Union exported 10.0 million tonnes of recovered paper with a value of €1.28bn to countries outside the EU (extra-EU trade) last year. According to figures published by the EU statistics office Eurostat, recovered paper exports to third countries were 10.8% lower than the previous year's amount of 11.2 million t worth €1.54bn. Shipments were at the lowest level since 2007, when 9.8 million t valued at €1.14bn were exported to non-EU countries. The considerably lower level of trade with China was a decisive factor for the decrease in overall exports to third countries. The drop in exports to the People's Republics is likely to have been caused by stricter import controls implemented since spring 2013 under China's "Green Fence" initiative.
