Common-interest communities (CICs) are a growing and indispensible component of the U.S. housing market. Taking on a variety of forms-including community associations,homeowners associations,condominiums,cooperatives,and planned-unit developments-these communities are home to an estimated 62 million Americans,almost 20 percent of the U.S. population. In some regions,the percentage of homes in association-governed communities far exceeds 20 percent.
