Whether the introduction of food and leisure operators to shopping centres or high streets really adds to retail spend is a debate that's raged for years, without consensus. The conflicting data seems to support both sides of the argument. This year, the BCSC report Food and Beverage: A Solution for Shopping Centres?'found that although having food and beverage operators increased the total amount of time people spent at centres, there was no hard evidence to show it increased retail dwell time and spend. Conversely, in June, location specialist CACI's annual Shopper Dimensions report found that consumers who used F&B outlets at retail centres spent on average 48% more on retail items, While these contradictory reports muddy the waters, its clear that landlords have been allocating more space to leisure operators over the past few years - particularly in the food and drink sector.
