When the City of London Corporation announced last September that long-serving stalwart of the planning world Peter Rees would be stepping down from his role as chief planning officer, there was widespread consternation. Rees had built up a reputation as a firm but fair figure, with an enviable record of allowing schemes to go ahead and an iron will in the face of bullish developers. Some people worried that his replacement might be less forward-thinking. Last month, the corporation revealed that Annie Hampson (pictured), the City's incumbent development director and Rees' respected deputy, would take on the role of chief planning officer from 1 April.
