Ray Rumsey is Assistant Vice President Communications & Signals for Norfolk Southern Railway. In 1977, he began his rail career with Conrail, where he served in various positions until joining NS as Chief Engineer MW&S in Atlanta in 1998. Wireless technology has helped in the areas of equipment reduction, reliability and employee efficiency. It has helped with codeline replacement as our pole line-based wireline and cable is being replaced by ATCS wireless systems. This has greatly increased reliability and availability for signal system train control. Many times this can be installed with dual or redundant coverage, which eliminates a single path failure.
