Progress of applications of active vibration control for buildings in Japan

In Japan, applications of active/hybrid mass dampers have steadily progressed since the first application in 1989. Particularly, applications of hybrid mass dampers with convertible active and passive modes have recently progressed because their effectiveness has been gradually recognized by many structural engineers. This paper overviews the progress of applications of active/ hybrid mass dampers, and describes merits of the hybrid mass dampers.
