Coast Guard proposes revised IMO standards to make lifeboat release mechanisms safer

The U.S. Coast Guard has presented the International Maritime Organization with a set of recommendations designed to prevent accidents involving lifeboat release mechanisms. The recommendations are based on what the Coast Guard learned during its investigation of a fatal lifeboat accident in Portland, Maine. One man was killed and two seriously injured during a lifeboat exercise aboard the semisub-mersible drilling platform Pride Rio de Janeiro on Jan. 13, 2004 (PM #79).
