Commercial vessel operators and crew are experiencing an unprecedented increase in the complexity of shipboard systems as microelectronics infiltrate, from bilge-level sensors to masthead lights. Each major system — engines, generators, HVAC, navigation, communication — may contribute dozens of sensors and alarms. As a result, a typical 150-foot vessel may have 300 to 500 alarm and monitoring points.
