Stricter rules on diesel emissions conning in January

New U.S. rules governing marine-diesel emissions will take effect Jan. 1, 2004. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's new mandatory limits on nitrous oxide (NOx) are identical to those proposed in 1997 by the International Maritime Organization. Since 1998 the EPA has made compliance with those standards in the United States voluntary in order to give the industry time to comply. The EPA and IMO regulations both specify maximum NOx emissions ranging from 17.0 gallons per kilowatt-hour (g/kwh) when the rated engine speed is less than 130 rpm, to 9.8 g/kwh when the engine speed is 2,000 rpm or more.
