The enhancement of Britain's rail freight network has taken a major step forward with the go-ahead given for a £28.3 million scheme aimed at relieving chronic track congestion at a major pinch point in the Midlands. Atkins and Balfour Beatty have been chosen by Network Rail to build a new 1.4km railway line north of Nuneaton station that will link the existing cross-country rail route from Felixstowe to Nuneaton with the West Coast Main Line. The construction of the Nuneaton North Chord will allow freight trains to travel through Nuneaton station without affecting passenger services, slashing disruption and making freight services more reliable.
