The imminent arrival of magnetically levitated trains will represent the culmination of over 30 years research and development. Ever since the early 1960s when Professor Eric Laithwaite's work with the linear induction motor demonstrated its possibility for the use in rail traction, so-called maglev trains have promised to deliver fantastic increases in running speeds and greatly reduced fuel consumption.
