It's never too early to begin the process of business planning. Two very different but equally important aspects of business planning are the strategic plan and the annual budget. Let's focus on the strategic plan. The strategic plan is a lot like controlled dreaming. You look several years ahead, ask "what if" and focus on how you want your business to operate and where you want your business to be in the future. This is in contrast to the annual budget: a very pragmatic, often draconian commitment to hit specific numbers in specific time brackets and thereby generate specific revenue, and most importantly specific profits. When dreaming up a strategic plan, you don't want to be brought down to earth by some bean-counter demanding specific performance.
