The internal speakers that are built into receivers and other pieces of electronic equipment are often a compromise between size and quality. Hence it is not unusual to have the designer add a connector to allow the use of a better external speaker - an approach I favour. The first problem I wanted to solve is that I have a few receivers that do not have an internal speaker or even a volume control, rather the audio output is fixed at 0dBm into 600Ω and I needed to interface these receivers with my external speaker.
