In the early 1950s, the french were constructing their largest liners since the 1930s. While great spending was a serious consideration, and air travel was still looming in the far distant future, the French Line decided not to build big, lavish liners. Instead, the company ordered a pair of rather moderate, intermediate liners for their Le Havre-West Indies colonial trade. But when the first of these, the Flandre, was nearing completion at a shipyard at Dunkirk, there was a sudden change in plans. She would go on the New York service, at least for two-thirds of the year, and replace the aged De Grasse. The second ship, the Antilles, constructed at Brest, would remain as planned for Caribbean service, joining the 1931-built Colombie and a reassigned De Grasse.
