Utilities are becoming more and more aware of the translation of business process to consumer prices. Still, many utility executives don't think about the track on which their coal is delivered until a train derailment occurs and coal de- livery is interrupted, or coal is spilled, or worse yet, someone is injured. One utility, Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), did look at its history of derailments and the significant costs associated with them, and decided to make some changes. OPPD brought in a third party track safety expert to perform a safety audit, evaluate its rail operations, and deliver a track maintenance plan. The result: No derailments and real dollar savings since the audit and plan were initiated.
