Seminole Electric Cooperative Inc.'s generating station experienced severe operating problems related to hydraulic oil quality, including pump failures, filter plugging and valve sticking. A switch to a new hydraulic oil drastically improved performance and eliminated costly hydraulic failures, creating huge savings for the electric cooperative. Located on 2,000 acres in Palatka, Fla., Seminole Electric's generating station began commercial operation in 1984 as the state's first cooperative-owned generating plant. The station, which consists of two 650-MW coal-fueled generating units, burns 10,000 tons of coal and petroleum coke each day and typically operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week at maximum capacity.
