On behalf of the Lee County (Fla.) Solid Waste Division, we would like to thank Power Engineering for selecting the Lee County Waste to Energy Expansion Project for the 2008 Project of the Year Award in the renewable energy category. Now, more than ever, the conversion of household garbage into electricity is a win-win-win for our nation's energy independence. Municipal solid waste converted to electricity offsets fossil fuels that would otherwise be used to generate an equivalent amount of electrical energy. Additional benefits include the reduction of required landfill volume by 90 percent and the recovery of valuable metals that are not otherwise recyclable from the waste stream.
