The struggle for a foothold in the intermodal gateway stakes is nowhere more evident than in the northern Adriatic. The gateway premise of such ports has been well aired, namely that containers bound from Asia, the Americas and elsewhere for central Europe would be better routed through the ports of southern rather than northern Europe, in terms of both cost and time.
