The port of Rotterdam remains the largest port in Europe but like many ports, it now faces uncertainty about future capacity. The port saw some good growth in 2000 but the unprecedented drop in container volumes, from 6.4mTEU to 6.3mTEU, is a worrying development for Rotterdam Municipal Port Management (RMPM). The authority attributes much of the blame for this fall to the restructuring of European Combined Terminals (ECT).
