Canadian National (CN) is seeking to boost its level of cross-border trade with the acquisition of Wisconsin Central Transportation for $ 1.2bn. The purchase price includes the assumption of about $400m in Wisconsin Central's debt. Wisconsin Central has around 2,850 miles of track and trackage rights in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan and Ontario. CN aims to connect its Canadian transcontinental network with the mainline railroad linking Chicago, Michigan and Wisconsin. CN is offering Wisconsin Central $ 17.15 per share. Under the terms of the deal, CN expects Wisconsin Central to continue selling off its minority stakes in overseas railway companies which includes a 42.5% stake in UK-based English, Welsh and Scottish Railway Holdings.
