Will Computers Think on Their Own?

Computers that tell us what to do—or refuse to open the pod bay doors—are not going to exist in 2001. But by some measures, computers can already "out-think" the most brilliant human minds. The fastest computers at the U.S. Department of Energy, for example, can easily outstrip us in terms of how many operations per second they can perform. Our meager brains can handle a few thousand instructions per second; the DOE computers can race through an astounding 2 trillion operations per second (2 teraflops).
