Mr. McCuire: "I just want to say one word to you, just one word." Ben Braddock: "Yes, sir. " Mr. McGuire: "Are you listening?" Ben Braddock: "Yes, sir, I am." Mr. McGuire: "Plastics!" Ben Braddock: "Exactly how do you mean?" Mr. McGuire: "There's a great future in plastics!" Any of you reading who do not recognize this dialogue from the 1967 movie The Graduate are surely due for another viewing of the film. In the above dialog, Mr. McGuire, played by actor Walter Brooke, facetiously acknowledges the importance of a then-new and growing plastics industry, subtly commenting on its insignificance in the mind of a 21-year-old college graduate who obviously had more pressing concerns on his mind. Since that film, as forecasted, plastics have taken on a role of monumental importance in our world. True, plastics are shunned as environmentally unfriendly, but the sad reality is, where would we be without them?
