Southern California Edison can procure at least 20 MW of energystorage projects to alleviate power supply shortages in the LosAngeles area due to Aliso Canyon, the California Public UtilitiesCommission decided Thursday.The plan responds to a 2017 state law that required new costeffectivestorage projects to mitigate the impact of the well failure atAliso Canyon. Under the law, the storage projects must be owned bythird parties must be capable of providing a four-hour durationresource adequacy service.This is not the first time the state has sought storage to addressAliso Canyon. In 2016, CPUC required SoCal Ed to conduct an expeditedprocurement and allowed San Diego Gas & Electric to expedite storagefrom a related solicitation, resulting in almost 100 MW of grid-levelstorage, the order noted.
