France can pay EDF compensation for early closure of the Fessenheim nuclear power plant consistent with European Union state aid rules, the European Commission said in a statement March 23. Compensation for closure of the 1,800-MW plant is "necessary and appropriate," the EC said. The plant was closed, in line with EU policy, in order to favor the development of renewable energy in France, the EC noted. A French government decision in 2015 to cap nuclear generating capacity "allows France to implement a policy of diversifying sources of electricity production," it said. EU member countries have committed themselves to obtaining at least 32% of their power mix from renewable sources by 2030, up from about 20% in 2020.
