Politics, local opposition challenges to renewable energy project development ramp up

Landowner opposition to energy infrastructure development is not reserved for fossil fuels, as renewables developers are facing increasing local resistance and political fights to get projects approved and sited, wind industry advocates said Sept. 22 at National Clean Energy Week’s Policy Makers Symposium. Wind is the leading source of renewable power in the US, and particularly in the Midwest, farmers and ranchers are being presented with opportunities to add an additional source of production to their land in the form of renewable energy. But with more deployment has come more interaction with communities, said Amy Farrell, senior vice president of government and public affairs at the American Wind Energy Association.
