Southern California Edison battery contracts approved to replace gas generation

The California Public Utilities Commission on Dec. 5 approved SouthernCalifornia Edison Co.'s request to procure 95 MW of energy storage tohelp offset the partial shutdown of the Aliso Canyon natural gasstorage facility and also to meet local capacity requirements in an areaof its service territory near Moorpark, California."By satisfying two objectives at one cost, these projects providegreater value to ratepayers," regulators said in their resolutionapproving the contracts, which have start dates in 2020 and 2021. Thesystems will support the state's reliability goals "by reducing localelectric demand and natural gas demand."
