Peak oil: a reality check

The absolute size of the hydrocarbon resource is neither the only constraint on future oil supply, nor the most important. It is the rate of production of that resource and the reasons why that rate must eventually decline that policymakers need to recognize. Even the most elementary analysis suggests serious risks to global oil supply within the next 20 years as a consequence of physical depletion of conventional resources.
