European Commission addresses offshore safety

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the US Gulf of Mexico was inevitably going to lead to political responses, and in October the European Commission finally unveiled its ideas on how to ensure that a similar disaster doesn't happen in EU or neighboring waters. Much to the relief of the oil and gas industry, rumors of a complete EU ban on deep sea drilling proved to be just that - rumors.rnThe Commission instead made a polite request to EU governments to consider suspending licenses for new complex offshore drilling until the lessons from the US disaster can be learnt and applied. In effect, for the moment, this allows each member state to do their own thing.
