Southern African coal boom stalls

For nearly ten years, Mozambique has been the rising star of the southern African coal scene. Coal production stirred in 2005, when multinationals took an interest, and the country subsequently looked to be on the fast-track to becoming a major player in the global coal business. But that dream appears to be running out of steam. At the centre of the industry is the rich Moatize basin -the site of the world's largest untapped reserves of coal, running into tens of billions of tons - and a basin which Rajat Kholi, Standard Bank's global head of mining and metals, believes could still produce more than 100 million mt of coal over the next five years alone.
