First Brazilian licensing round in five years sees record interest

Brazil held its first bidding round for oil and gas concessions in five years in May, raising a record Reals 2.823 ($1,397) billion and completing in one day what had been planned as a twc-day event. The government put a total 289 blocks on offer, and 142 were sold. The directorgeneral of Brazil's National Petroleum Agency, Magda Chambriard, said it was the most successful auction yet staged. "It beat all the records of all the rounds," she said. The auction began with the sale of 13 onshore blocks in the Parnaiba Basin in northeast Brazil. All 13 were auctioned and brought in a total signing bonus of Reals 61.366 million, with winning bidders promising to invest Reals 443 million in the blocks. A 50:50 joint venture between Petrobras and Petrogal won five blocks, Petra Energia won five and OGX two blocks, with the final block going to Sabre.
