Global coal demand in the balance

China may have curbed its massive domestic coal plant construction program, but so central is coalrnto the country’s energy system that faster-than-expected growth in electricity demand will see arnreversion to higher coal use. China is also providing cheap finance to build a huge amount of coalrnplant abroad; doing so is an integral part of its Belt and Road Initiative. Given the 40-50 year life ofrncoal plant, global greenhouse emissions targets are clearly at risk.
